Sappo School is one of the leading Independent Private Schools on Long Island today. We are the forerunners in the movement toward educational reform and academic excellence. Over the past decades, Sappo has served Long Island families by providing both a safe and motivational learning environment for each and every child. Well known and respected by top professionals in the child health care field, Sappo applies the latest scientific research to the curricula. As founders of SHAPE (Sappo’s Holistic Approach and Procedures in Education) Strategies, Sappo has been successful in changing the way children learn.
Sappo School is a New York State approved college preparatory school with an approved special education department. We cater to students who work best in an intimate environment while receiving personal attention and forming social attachments. There are no more than 12 students per class, while the average class size is 8 students. The dropout rate is 0% and over 90% of our graduates go on to the colleges of their choice. A high percent of our graduates receive substantial scholarships toward their post-graduate education.
Our program promotes the truism that diverse needs can be met, no matter what the origin or nature of those needs may be. Sappo’s unique program is able to bend to the needs of the student, rather than unrealistically expecting the student to bend to the rigid demands of an impersonal institution. Individual differences become a driving force toward mutual understanding, cooperative learning and tolerance that can spark achievement toward higher goals. Diversity is identified, nurtured, and addressed using an all encompassing range of criterion-based responses from our team of educators.
As the only research based private school on Long Island, Sappo is able to address the needs of the regular and special education students with careful and purposeful instruction. Research has taught us to respectfully consider that learning best happens when social and emotional needs of the student are in place. Sappo uses an SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) approach that is made complete by the holistic nature of the program. Our inclusion setting allows us to remove all barriers between the general education, regular education and gifted student, in order to give the right to participate in the education process free from a socially limited exclusion policy.
Teaching to the whole child, rather than to his or her independent parts, is the basis for all of our work and the reason for the remarkable success we have had.
